The Massachusetts Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Commission issued two guidance documents for constables on Dec. 18, 2025.
These documents are intended to clarify which actions are permitted and which are not permitted for constables who are not certified by the POST Commission. Constables without a POST certification should not be executing arrests. These documents also offer some guidance to law enforcement officers on coordinating with constables when appropriate.
The documents are:
- Practical Guidance for Massachusetts Constables (PDF): This document provides 20 practical examples of situations a constable may encounter as part of their job, along with guidance on appropriate actions.
- DOs and DON’Ts for Constables (PDF): This document explains, in plain language, which actions are permitted and which are not permitted.
Together, these documents offer clear, practical guidance to help constables perform their duties, including serving process, while remaining compliant with the POST Commission’s statute and regulations.
The guidance was developed in consultation and collaboration with the Massachusetts Trial Court, and in response to questions from constables and the public about the role of constables. Constables are encouraged to review both documents and retain them for reference.
