Chiefs and Agency Heads:
Pursuant to 555 CMR 6.10(2) and 550 CMR 6.10(2), the Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission (POST) and the Municipal Police Training Committee (MPTC) developed a Model Use of Force Policy (Model Policy) for law enforcement agencies (agencies) in Massachusetts. The Model Policy was approved by the MPTC Full Committee on March 18, 2026, and the POST Commission on March 19, 2026.
As POST and MPTC relayed to agencies during the regional trainings on the Model Policy in June, agencies must complete a self-assessment by Sept. 30, 2026, confirming that their Use of Force Policy is “consistent” with the Model Policy. See 555 CMR 6.10(2) and 550 CMR 6.10(2).

The Model Policy is available in two formats: Model Use of Force Policy (PDF) or Model Use of Force Policy (Word). The Model Policy closely tracks M.G.L. c. 6E, the regulations, and the Use of Force Agency Certification Standard, as well as relevant accreditation standards. It also represents best practices.
